Nastaje u vodi čija se temperatura kreće oko minus dva stepena Celzijusa.
Kako nastaje “prst smrti”?
In the Antarctic Ocean, a mesmerizing yet deadly natural phenomenon lurks beneath the surface—a brinicle, also known as “the finger of death.” First discovered in the 1960s, the generally accepted model of their formation was proposed by the US oceanographer Seelye Martin in 1974.
These underwater icicles remained elusive and mysterious until BBC filmmakers finally captured their formation in 2011. Using time-lapse cameras, the filmmakers recorded a brinicle’s dramatic descent in the icy waters off Antarctica, unveiling its lethal beauty to the world for the first time.
Imagine a hollow tube of ice, essentially a fusion of brine and icicle, growing from the sea ice and stretching downward toward the ocean floor. When seawater freezes, it pushes out salt, creating a cocktail of supercooled, supersaline water.
This dense, briny water flows downward, weaving a sheath of ice around itself. The brinicle’s formation can span hours or even days, but the result is nothing short of astonishing—a frozen spire extending meters into the abyss.
But the brinicle’s allure comes with a chilling price. As it descends, it freezes everything in its wake, encapsulating sea creatures like starfish, sea urchins, and sea anemones in a shroud of ice. These animals, now entombed, perish in what becomes a frozen graveyard radiating from the brinicle.
